What is a roof drain?

A roof drain is installed flush with the surface of a flat roof and allows rainwater to drain efficiently from the roof. They are conventionally round or square shaped, with a flat grating that can be walked across, although a cast aluminium dome or gravel guard may be fitted to prevent leaves and similar debris or small stone particles from entering the sump and causing it to clog.

The construction of the roof drain will vary depending on the roof construction.

  • With a cold (uninsulated) roof, the waterproof membrane is located above the roof deck but below the insulation layer.
  • With a warm (insulated) roof, the waterproof membrane is located above an insulation layer on top of the roof deck.
  • With an inverted roof construction, the waterproof membrane is located above the roof deck but below the insulation layer.

Where a flat roof has a parapet, a parapet outlet may be set into the angle between the parapet and the roof to drain water from the perimeter of the roof into an external downpipe.

Another variation of the roof drain is the balcony outlet. For use on balconies with an asphalt finish, the grating is designed to allow a rainwater downpipe from the balcony above to be fitted into the body, eliminating spillage onto the walkway.

Frost also supplies a wide range of roof drain accessories including extensions and spigot adaptors, bearing pans and gravel guards, sealants, cleaners and degreasers.

What is a floor drain?

A floor drain performs a similar function to a roof drain, although they are more commonly used inside buildings. Used in a wide variety of applications that range from wet rooms in homes, hospitals and care facilities to food and chemical processing plants, they collect and remove water and other liquid spillages.

Frost shower drain assemblies feature a flat, stainless steel grid that is safe and comfortable for bare feet, hygienic and easily cleaned. They are ideal for use with vinyl flooring.

Frost also manufactures floor drains for a wide range of commercial and industrial use. With the flush-fitting floor grating made from cast iron, stainless steel or nickel bronze and with the whole unit designed for light, medium or heavy-duty use, there is almost certainly a Frost floor drain for every application.

The Frost range of floor drain products also includes rodding eye assemblies. Manufactured in stainless steel or nickel bronze, they feature a double seal and threaded outlet that, with a height adjustment range of 25mm (more with extension collars), allows the rodding eye to be set precisely with the finished floor level.

Frost also supplies a wide range of floor drain accessories including extensions and spigot adaptors, filter baskets, backwater valves, removable bottle traps and bolt-on funnels.

What is a planter drain?

Large steel or concrete planters are rapidly becoming a familiar feature of the built environment, transforming housing developments, shopping areas and commercial districts. Providing these planters with proper drainage is essential for the health of the soil and the plants, but simply allowing the water to drain from the bottom of the planter may cause problems such as the staining of surrounding surfaces (rust stains from Corten weathering steel planters are particularly problematic).

Frost planter drains are an effective means of maintaining a good moisture level in planter soils. Their construction – either a perforated PVC standpipe or a cast aluminium dome covered with a stainless steel mesh screen – prohibits gravel or soil from entering the drain and maintains efficient drainage. Connected to an outflow pipe, the planter drain can direct excess water to a nearby stormwater drain or soakaway.
